Tarzan and the Trappers (1958)
Tarzan and the Trappers was much unlike Scott's first three films. The final black-and-white Tarzan film, Trappers is actually an edited version of a pilot and two episodes of a proposed Tarzan TV series. High production costs sank the networks' interest in the series. Don't miss Scatman Crothers, who has a role in the film.Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959)
In 1958, Sol Lesser sold Scott's contract to Sy Weintraub; the new producer took his star to Paramount Pictures and, fueled by bigger production budgets, made two of the most successful Tarzan films, Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (1959) and Tarzan the Magnificent (1960).Tarzan the Magnificent (1960)
In 1960, Scott left the role of Tarzan for the greener pastures of sword and sandal films. Weintraub selected Jock Mahoney, who was the oldest man to ever be first cast in the role of Tarzan, at age 42; nevertheless, Mahoney represented a return to the leaner, lithe Tarzan pioneered by Johnny Weissmuller. Mahoney had previously appeared in Scott's Tarzan the Magnificent as the evil Coy Banton. Also in the cast is veteran actor John Carradine as Coy Banton's father.
Although Scott bowed out of Hollywood for the lucrative allure of sword and sandal epics, he did make one more appearance as Tarzan, in 1971. See the photo below.
